Chicago is always a great place to be—even in the coldest months of the year. And whether you’re a longtime Chicagoan, recently moved to the area, or are just visiting, you can find some amazing and fun things to do in the winter in Chicago. Our town is, after all, the second most beautiful city in the world!
We’re not just the best movers in Chicago. We’re also residents that are in absolute love with our city! Here are some of our favorite spots. We hope you have as much fun during the winter as we do!
1. See Chicago’s beauty shine through in light displays
If you’re looking for fun for all ages, check out some of Chicago’s light displays.
Lincoln Park Zoo is a Chicago landmark. And they host one of the city’s favorite winter traditions: Zoo Lights! This festive display offers free nights, sensory-friendly displays, and special events. You can also see cold-weather animals like polar bears, snowy owls, and even Chilean flamingos in their outdoor habitats. And then warm up inside indoor exhibits like the ape house and lion house.
Another amazing illumination display is showcased by the Chicago Botanic Garden. Lighscape includes everything from an illuminated trail to singing trees that you can croon along with. If you’re having trouble getting into the holiday spirit, you’ll definitely want to check this out.
2. Make time for a show
Chicago has one of the best theater scenes in the United States. You can take in some reimagined classics at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater or attend a masterpiece at the infamous Goodman Theatre in the heart of downtown.
If you’re into lesser-known productions, just check out a list of shows playing at smaller and independent venues throughout the city. Whatever you’re looking for, you can find it in one of Chicago’s 250 theaters!
3. Find things that don’t exist anywhere else
The Windy City is unique. So if you’re looking for a winter experience you won’t find anywhere else, check out these highlights:
- Go Ice skating ribbon at Maggie Daley Park.
- Give that new sled a workout at sledding locations across Chicagoland.
- Visit the Winter Wonderland at Gallagher Way adjacent to Wrigley Field. They offer ice skating, ice bumper cars, and even curling!
- If you don’t mind a short drive, head up to Wilmot Mountain in southern Wisconsin to get you skiing and snowboarding fix.
4. Volunteer and help out your fellow Chicagoans
Our fair city is known for its giving spirit. And you can help fellow Chicago residents throughout the winter. Volunteer at a food pantry like Common Pantry, help supply warm clothes to children with Cradles to Crayons, and give some love to the four-legged Chicagoans at Paws Chicago. And if you need a hand finding additional opportunities, start your volunteer journey with Chicago Cares.
5. Enjoy a wintry drink
After all those winter activities, it’s nice to enjoy a seasonal drink. Start off with house-made glogg at Simon’s Tavern in Andersonville. And then head downtown to have a nightcap at some heated rooftop bars.
Chicago has plenty of hot cocktails. Just look around the city to find your favorite!
