Moving During Coronavirus

Moving During Coronavirus

At MOVE-TASTIC!, our top concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community - from our amazing crew in the office and in the field to our wonderful loyal clients and community partners. As this has been a rapidly evolving situation, we continue to seek guidance and direction from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to guide our business decisions and health protocols and will continue to evaluate and adjust our operating procedures as more information is available.

Moving can be incredibly stressful and even more stressful during these uncertain times, but we’re working hard to take the necessary precautions to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus within the community while still honoring the needs of our clients and working to perform all moves as scheduled. On Friday, March 20, 2020, Governor Pritzker issued Executive Order 2020-10: EXECUTIVE ORDER IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19 (COVID-19 EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 8). Under this directive, the governor specifically indicated that our business operations were deemed essential and so we plan to continue our operations while actively monitoring the situation and working to make adjustments as needed.

Steps We're Taking to Keep Our Community Safe

We are closely monitoring all guidance and business operating recommendations from our public health agencies and we’re continuing to evaluate our operating procedures to identify best practices for providing this essential service while working to maintain the health and wellness of our community. Unfortunately, due to the many unknowns of this virus, there is still some inherent risk associated with any interactions with other individuals right now.

EDUCATION

We’re continuing to research and share with our crews all of the guidance and instructions for preventing the spread of COVID-19. We have emailed and posted instructional flyers from our public health agencies in our movers lounge, warehouse, office and common areas and provide morning briefings.

SAFETY & HEALTH PROCEDURES

We have extensive signage from the CDC and the CDPH with guidance and during our daily morning meetings, we discuss the proper protocols for:

  • GOOD HAND HYGIENE PRACTICES

Thoroughly washing hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds, per CDC guidelines. Providing hand sanitizer to crew members working in the field.

  • PROPER RESPIRATORY ETIQUETTE

Coughing or sneezing into tissues or elbows, properly disposing of used tissues and washing hands, per CDC guidelines.

  • CLEANING & DISINFECTING HARD SURFACES

We’re regularly wiping down hard surfaces throughout our facility and have made disinfecting wipes available to thoroughly disinfect our trucks daily.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

We’ve transitioned our monthly employee meetings to virtual meetings and are encouraging all teammates to practice good social distancing by maintaining a distance of 6-feet from coworkers and clients, as much as possible. We’ve also reiterated the importance of adhering to the Stay Home order when not at work.

Feeling Sick?

IF A CREW MEMBER ISN’T FEELING WELL

Anyone who doesn’t feel well (or who has a housemate with COVID-19 related symptoms) is required to stay home. Employees have an extra 80hrs of paid sick leave available to them, and we have stressed the importance of taking the necessary time to be fully recovered before requesting to return to work (and have protocols and guidelines for return to work)

IF YOU AREN’T FEELING WELL

If you or someone in your household isn’t feeling well or if you suspect exposure to any illness, there is NO CHARGE to reschedule your move appointment due to illness (72hrs notice is typically requested). Drop us a line at (773) 715-3227 or email us at info@move-tastic.com so that we can find an alternate date that works for you!

THINGS WE’RE DOING TO MAKE YOUR MOVE DAY SAFE!

PROTOCOLS & TRAINING

We have implemented new protocols to prevent virus spread and we’re providing ongoing training for our crews on ways to modify operating procedures to increase safety.

DISINFECTING SUPPLIES

We provide our team with hand sanitizer at our facility and in the field. Crews also have pocket-sized packs of hand sanitizing wipes, containers in each vehicle of disinfecting wipes to sanitize trucks and moving supplies before, during and after the move day.

PPE

The health and safety of our team is very important to us! Our crews are being provided with face masks to wear and they’re receiving instructions for proper fit and use.

ADJUSTING SERVICE OFFERINGS

The items listed above our part of our standard operating procedures while COVID-19 procedures are in place. We’re also working to custom-tailor solutions for clients to minimize interactions, including options to send documents digitally in advance, arranging for clients to be off-site (either by designating a proxy or through virtual walk-throughs) or whatever modifications we can accommodate to meet your needs. These would be custom offerings and currently not part of our standard moving services. So, please let us know of any special requests at the time of booking and we will advise if we’re able to accommodate the requests and any additional applicable fees for those service offerings!

... BUT, THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE CAN’T DO

CAN’T DISINFECT CLIENTS HOME OR PERSONAL BELONGINGS

While our trucks are stocked with disinfecting wipes to ensure the cleanliness of our trucks and moving equipment, our movers are skilled movers and are not trained in professional cleaning and disinfecting.

CAN’T TEST EVERYONE FOR THE VIRUS

Unfortunately, due to the limited supply of COVID-19 tests and the strict set of diagnostic guidelines used to allocate those tests, it is not possible for us to test all team members. We require any team member who feels unwell to STAY HOME, employees have 80 hours of paid COVID-19 sick time available, increased flexibility in our attendance policy so employees can call off without fear of disciplinary actions, and we have tightened return-to-work protocols to keep everyone on our team healthy.

CAN’T VIOLATE OSHA GUIDELINES

Carrying heavy loads through tight entries and stairways is a physically demanding job. As a company, we are required to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our crews in the field. Therefore, we must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • MUST WEAR SHOES

While some industries can wear booties over shoes, as our crews are climbing stairs while carrying heavy items, the cloth booties do not provide stable footing and could lead to slips and falls. To provide a barrier over the surface of your floors, we do have hardwood floor protectors and carpet protectors available for sale.

  • NO SURGICAL GLOVES

If you’re reserving a packing appointment, the crews can wear surgical gloves upon request. While moving, latex gloves adversely affect grip and can make carrying items more difficult. Latex gloves are not currently a COVID-19 prevention recommendation and due to shortages of PPE available to medical professionals, we’re limiting their use. We are encouraging our crews to wear work gloves whenever reasonably possible and most importantly to wash their hands often!

CAN’T LAUNDER 1000 BLANKETS DAILY

Our moving blankets are washed regularly and crews are advised to exchange any wet or soiled blankets daily. However, as we cannot launder every blanket daily, if you are concerned about reused moving blankets, we recommend that you purchase new warehouse pads from us during the reservation process and we’ll buy them back from you at the end of your move!

HOW YOU CAN HELP TO CREATE A SAFE MOVE DAY!

PROVIDE HAND WASHING STATION

The top public health guidelines to keep people safe is to practice good hand hygiene by washing hands for 20secs! We are extremely appreciative if you’re able to have a designated sink and hand washing supplies (soap & paper towels) available for use throughout the duration of the move.

LIMIT SIZE OF GATHERING

Public health advice indicates we should limit our interactions to as few people as possible and so we ask that the number of people on-site throughout the move are limited as much as possible.

NOT FEELING WELL? RESCHEDULE FOR FREE!

We typically request 72-hours notice for schedule changes, but if anyone in your household isn’t feeling well or may be ill, there is no charge to reschedule your move to another day!

GOOD MOVE DAY PREP

Being completely packed and prepped prior to move day is the best way to ensure a great move any day! During COVID-19, the following prep could help to limit interactions between client and crew:

  • LABEL BOX DESTINATION

On one side of the box (not the top), mark the room the box should be moved to.

  • BE FULLY PACKED IN BOXES BEFORE MOVE DAY

Moves are faster and items are transported more safely when secured inside a box. Need boxes?? Let us know as soon as you book and we’ll deliver before your move day.

MOVING SUPPLIES

We strongly recommend the use of mattress bags. Each truck is stocked with a limited selection of moving supplies, call us for additional recommendations and we’ll make sure your crew has what you need on move day!

QUESTIONS / CONCERNS?
