Streeterville is a neighborhood in Chicago’s Near-North Side community area. The neighborhood is named after the eccentric George Streeter, who attempted to defraud landowners, buyers, and city officials by selling off portions of “real estate” that were created by the dumping of refuse from the Great Chicago Fire into Lake Michigan. Today, much of Chicago’s lakefront is indeed made up of this post-fire landfill, making Streeter’s early attempts to “sell” the land for development seem as visionary as they were grift.
Streeterville covers the zip codes 60610 and 60611, and unofficially encompasses the area between the Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan, with the Chicago River as its southern border, though the City of Chicago only recognizes a small portion of the area as Streeterville, officially. The area has undergone major development since the early 2000s, with multiple new highrises for commercial and residential use.
